5th Grade
The 5th-grade curriculum is designed to get students thinking about their transition to middle school. The students will find challenges in writing and research opportunities. Students are encouraged to be great role models for the younger students by being kind and making good choices. Students take on more responsibilities for themselves, such as turning in work on time and only turning in their best work.
Language Arts
Students explore a variety of literature through reading fiction and nonfiction excerpts, as well as through novel studies. Grammar will cover the Indiana Academic Standards. Students will explore the purposes of writing and write for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Mathematics
In 5th grade, students will heighten their skills with fractions, work with decimals, learn about the coordinate plane, and work with formulas to find area, volume and perimeter. Students will also learn how to evaluate and write numerical expressions. Students will relate what they are learning in class to how math is used in everyday life through class projects.
Religion
5th-grade students' religion curriculum focuses on the 7 sacraments of the Catholic faith. Students spend a lot of time speaking to family members about the sacraments they have received. Students are encouraged to ask questions about the beliefs of the church. One of the class's field trips is to St. Meinrad where students learn about religious life.
Students also participate in the school’s program, Faith in Action. Through this program, students spread love and kindness throughout their community and enjoy the act of giving.
Social Studies
Students will spend a lot of time learning about the building of the United States, starting with the Indians. The class will complete a large research project on Indian culture and create a piece of work themselves. Students will also learn about the Founding Fathers, Presidents, and First Ladies of this country.
Science
Students will be given opportunities to participate in many hands-on activities and experiments that relate to the 5th-grade curriculum. This starts with properties of matter, energy, forces, ecosystems, and earth’s place in the universe.
